TOMOHON HILLTOP TOWN
The hilltop town of Tomohon (830 meters above sea level), known locally as the “city of flowers or Kota Bunga”, sits in a saddle between two volcanoes, Lokon and Mahawu. The climate is delightfully temperate; fruits and a wide range of flowers – hibiscus, angel trumpets, bougainvillaea, lilies, gladiolas, carnations and irises – are grown commercially to supply markets in Manado. The town’s main road is lined with flower stalls, every yard seems to overflow with lush foliage and the road sides are planted with deep red croton plants. Well-proportioned ponies pull beautifully-decorated horse carts, known as Bendi, offen leaving little room for motorized trafific. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday mornings a local market sell the special ingredients used in the nototious local cuisine, such as : Rats, Bats and Dogs. Tomohon is famed as an educational center, and there is a large auditorium a top Bukit Inspirasi, a hill that gives a striking view of the town with Mount Lokon in the background.
Mount LOKON (1580 meters above sea level), magnificent active volcano. Last eruption 1991. Following the frozen lava flow you will reach the steaming crater which lies bellow the peak of the mountain. At this point the landscape takes on the appearance of the charred moonscape. To reach crater takes a total of about 2 hours and to the top about 3 and half hours. Be sure to bring sturdy footwear.
